University of La Verne and SCIAC Update for Fall 2020

University of La Verne and SCIAC Update for Fall 2020

Statement from the SCIAC

Dear Leos,

In collaboration with all SCIAC members, changes in legislation for NCAA Fall Championships, as well as changes to mandated playing and practice seasons, the SCIAC Presidents have unanimously agreed "to cancel conference competition at least for NCAA categorized high-contact risk sports in the fall semester."

For University of La Verne Athletics, this includes volleyball, men's and women's basketball, football, men's and women's soccer, and men's water polo. The SCIAC remains committed to "exploring meaningful competitive conference experiences for fall sport student-athletes in the spring semester."

Discussion for fall participation in low and medium contact risk sports including men's women's cross country, men's and women's golf, and men's and women's swimming diving will be ongoing and in conjunction with what state and county regulations ultimately allow. As we return to school, each sport will have the opportunity to practice within the guidelines of the new 114-day plan from the NCAA.

As we have witnessed year in and year out, our students have always been a source of strength. In particular, these past few months have been very inspiring to me as I witness the outstanding character, initiative, and ingenuity coming from our teams and students as well as the staff and supporters who rally behind them. As we move forward our personal accountability will play a major role in what we can accomplish together as a larger group.

While we contemplate our next steps our institution and conference will closely monitor the changes provided to us by federal, state, and local county health authorities. As a conference, we will continue to consult with each other and make decisions we believe will be in the best interest of the health and safety of our students, staff, administration, and fans. Thank you in advance for your support and your resolve as we work extremely hard to explore meaningful opportunities in athletics and what these experiences will mean for us in the months and years ahead.

Go Leos!

Sincerely,

Scott Winterburn
Director of Athletics
