Updated 12/2/20

The University of La Verne and the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) continue to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation and make decisions we believe are in the best interest of our student-athletes.

Competition

Will there be SCIAC competition for 2020-2021 Fall and Winter Sports?

No. In accordance with public health guidance and safety standards, as well as NCAA Resocialization recommendations, the SCIAC Presidents have unanimously agreed to cancel conference competition, including championships, for all fall and winter sports during the 2020-21 academic year. The following sports are included in this recent decision: men's and women's soccer, men's water polo, football, women's volleyball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's swimming & diving, and men's and women's basketball. Institutions have the autonomy to decide whether they wish to permit conditioning, practicing, and other forms of competition as it relates to fall and winter sports during this spring semester.

Will there be SCIAC competition for 2020-2021 Spring Sports?

Hopefully! The SCIAC and its members remain committed to exploring meaningful competitive conference experiences for spring sport student-athletes later in the spring semester. As the pandemic evolves, the SCIAC will continue to monitor changing federal, state, and local guidance, and will continue to consult with each other as well as public health authorities. The health and well-being of all constituents involved have been and will continue to be, the driving force behind our individual and collective decisions during this challenging time.

Academics, Athletics, and Eligibility

With online learning, do I still have to be a full-time student to participate?

YES! You must be a full-time student (enrolled in a minimum of 12 units for the current semester) to participate in any practice or competition. (Remember that it is always best to add a class before dropping one to maintain your eligibility.)

If we compete in the Spring, will I lose a year of eligibility?

No. The NCAA has approved several waivers:

  1. Student-athletes will not be charged with a season of eligibility during the 2020-21 academic year no matter what level of sport participation occurs.
  2. Student-athletes will be provided an extension of the 10-semester enrollment rule for full-time semesters used during the 2020-21 academic year.

Both waivers apply to all fall, winter, and spring sport student-athletes.

Am I able to return to ULV for a fifth year to make up for the season of competition I missed this year?

Yes! If you are considering a fifth year, talk to your head coach, and then contact Christie Joines (cjoines@laverne.edu), Assistant Athletic Director - Compliance, to make sure you understand and meet all conditions.

When will we be allowed to hold team workouts?

Under current state and county guidance, in-person team gatherings and workouts are not permitted. We plan to allow our coaches to hold workouts within the scope of state, county, NCAA, and SCIAC rules once we are allowed to do so.

Do student-athletes still need to complete medical clearance paperwork and screening requirements with Sports Medicine?

Yes. In order to participate in any athletic-related activities with your team and coaches, you must have a completed (and required) physical and Sportsware profile. Until your medical eligibility requirements are finalized, you will not be able to participate in any team activities. There are no exceptions to this policy. Please send any questions or concerns in this regard to our Head Athletic Trainer, Jo Engel-Finer at jengel@laverne.edu.

Housing

Will there be on-campus housing available for the spring semester?

State and county public health guidelines for residence halls require the university to limit housing to single occupancy rooms and to students with the greatest need. Priority will be given to students with housing insecurity (i.e. without a consistent or safe home), international students, and out of state students. When permitted by county and state guidance, we hope to be able to support students who do not have academically supportive home environments.

Questions should go to housing@laverne.edu.
