U of R Women's Water Polo wins first SCIAC game beating La Verne 12-9

LA VERNE, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Water Polo team (2-13, 1-2) picked up their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) win of the season as they took down the University of La Verne 12-9 Wednesday afternoon on the road.  

The Bulldogs had a great first eight minutes, holding a 3-1 lead thanks to a trio of goals from Emma Parker (Yucaipa, CA), Hannah Long (Rancho Cucamonga, CA), and Breanna Bailey (Rancho Cucamonga, CA).

The second quarter was competitive with the Leopards holding the 3-2 advantage as the Bulldogs' lead was cut to one, 5-4 at the half. The two Bulldogs who scored were Parker for a second time and Anika Lundbaek (San Anselmo, CA).

After nine goals in the first 16 minutes, the two teams combined for nine goals in the third quarter as the game would get deadlocked at nine following three periods.  

In the third Long scored off a Sofia Portello (Sonoma, CA) assist at the 6:42 mark, Danielle Cary (Riverside, CA) regained the lead for UR, 7-6, at the 5:22 mark right before two goals in the final :55 seconds from Courtney Sawin (Tacoma, WA) and Long.  

In the final quarter the Bulldogs' tough defensive unit returned as their offense scored three unanswered goals to seal the 12-9 win. Parker, Katrina Nielsen (Houston, TX), and Bailey, on a penalty shot, all connected.  

Redlands took 24 shots on the game (.500 shot percentage), going 0-for-6 on power-plays.  They were called for 14 exclusions but held ULV to a .071 clip on the afternoon (1-for-14).  Tori Zielinski (Sunnyvale, CA) played all 32:00 minutes and posted 14 saves in the victory.    

The Bulldogs will look to take momentum into their road conference game at Caltech this Saturday, March 18 at 11:00 a.m.
