Baseball defeats Whittier, 8-1

WHITTIER, Calif. — Javi Iniguez pitched his best game of the season, the offense collected 16 hits and the Unviersity of La Verne baseball team beat Whittier, 8-1, on Saturday at Memorial Field.

La Verne improves to 18-19 overall and 11-15 in the SCIAC. Whittier falls to 14-22 and 11-14.

Iniguez (3-5) fired his first complete game of the season, giving up just one run on five hits while striking out four.

Thomas went a perfect 3-for-3, including his homerun, and had four RBI and two runs scored. Ben White was 3-for-4 with a solo homerun and four runs scored.

The Leopards jumped out to a quick start. After a quick out to start the game, La Verne four straight hits to grab a 3-0 lead. Thomas drove in Christopher Peres to open the scoring and Anthony Gonzale hit a two-run double.

Daniel McDonnell sacrificed in White in the third inning to extend the lead, White led off the sixth with a solo homer and White sealed the game with a three-run shot in the top of the ninth.

Christopher Ligot notched three hits in the leadoff spot. Peres and Gonzalez each finished with two hits.

Whittier's Nick Garcia was tagged with the loss after giving up seven runs in 8.1 innings.

The Leopards are back in action tomorrow at Cal Lutheran for a single game at 3 p.m.
