LA VERNE, Calif. — The La Verne baseball team dropped a pair of games to Wesleyan (Conn.) on Friday at Ben Hines Field.
Game 1: Wesleyan 2, La Verne 0
In a game that featured just two total hits, Wesleyan (Conn.) claimed a 2-0 win over the La Verne baseball team in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday at Ben Hines Field.
La Verne starter Christopher Peres (4-1) cruised through the first 5 2/3 innings without giving up a hit but ran into trouble with two outs in the sixth inning. Ryan Earle hit a screaming line drive to second that was too hot to handle for Wesleyan's first base hit and the Cardinals drew three consecutive walks to push across the first run of the game.
Hayden Firth then came on the relieve Peres but he also gave up a walk to make it 2-0 for Wesleyan.
Wesleyan's Nick Miceli (2-0) pitched a complete game while allowing just one hit to pick up the win.
Christopher Ligot recorded the Leopards' lone hit in the bottom of the fourth, a line drive to center field with one out. But Andrew Douglas hit into a fielder's choice in the next at bat and Justin Wright fouled out to end the threat.
La Verne's best chance to score came in the bottom of the first. Jakob Thomas drew a one-out walk and Dylan Lowenstein was hit by a pitch, but the Leopards couldn't cash in.
Game 2: Wesleyan 11, La Verne 6
In a polar opposite of the first game, Wesleyan amassed 21 hits and scored 11 runs to defeat the Leopards 11-6 in the nightcap.
Clinging to a one-run lead, the Cardinals put up five runs on six hits in the top of the eighth to pull away from the Leopards. Danny Rose and Ellis Schaefer led off the inning with back-to-back singles and Jonny Corning hit a single of his own to plate Rose. Andrew Keith followed with another single and Will O'Sullivan brought home Corning on a groundout. Nick Miceli capped off the inning with a two-run single up the middle to give the Cardinals a 11-5 lead.
The Leopards got one back in the bottom of the eighth as Grant Thompson and Ashton Edior were both hit by pitches. The runners advanced on a wild pitch and Jacob Benson plated Thompson with a grounder to short.
The Leopards again put two runners with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but could not string together any hits.
Edior got on base all four plate appearances. He was 2-for-2 with a triple and drove in a pair of runs with a single in the sixth inning to get the Leopards within 6-5. He also stole a base.
Corning had four hits for Wesleyan and Keith, O'Sullivan and Rose each had three.
