Baseball sweeps Beavers

LA VERNE, Calif. — Jakob Thomas and Andy Martinez each finished with four RBI and the University of La Verne baseball completed a sweep against the Caltech Beavers Saturday at Ben Hines Field.

Season Impact: The Leopards improve to 5-4 overall and 5-1 in SCIAC play. Caltech drops to 2-7 overall and 0-6 in conference play.

Game Two: La Verne 4, Caltech 3

Nicholas Michaels went 3-4 at the plate with an RBI as the Leopards opened the day with a one-run win over the Beavers. 

Cody Norman picked up the win going five innings in his start with four strikeouts. Nick Byrd earned a four-inning save also striking out four.

After Caltech took a 3-2 lead off a Cortland Perry single that scored two, La Verne caught a break to tie the game back up. With Thomas on third and Michaels on first after the pair each got on base with a single, Grant Messner threw a wild pitch that allowed Thomas to score, tying the game 3-3.

Brandon Vogel singled to right in the bottom of the fifth to score Grant Thompson in what proved to be the winning run. 

Mauricio Guadarrama also added an RBI in the first inning when he hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Michaels. 

Game Three: La Verne 14 Caltech 3 (Seven Innings)

Martinez had a big day at the plate, finishing the game 3-4 and scoring twice. The catcher extended the Leopards' lead to 3-0 in the third with a single to right center that scored Christopher Ligot and Mauricio Guadarrama. He added his third and fourth RBI the next inning with a double to left center that brought in Ligot and Lukas Granado.

Thomas left the yard in the third to cap off an eight-run inning for the Leopards. The designated hitter launched a three-run shot over the left-center wall to score Jacob Benson and Vogel. He doubled in fourth, adding his fourth RBI of the day.

Vogel added two RBI of his own when he tripled in the third inning to bring home Thompson and Martinez.

Granado finished the day with a triple and a double with an RBI and two runs scored. 

AJ Jimenez picked up the win for La Verne, pitching four innings and adding a strikeout and no walks. Ben Rodriguez, Art Corona Jr., and Hayden Firth each pitched an inning with a strikeout.

Next Series: The Leopards open a three-game series against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with a 2:30 p.m. game next Friday at Ben Hines Field.
