LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne baseball team finished the day with 28 hits and outscored Pomona-Pitzer 28-4 on its way to completing its sweep of the Sagehens Saturday afternoon at Ben Hines Field.
Season Impact: The Leopards and Sagehens were tied for second place going into this weekend's games. With the sweep, the Leopards move to 23-11 overall and 14-4 in the SCIAC to take control of second place. La Verne only trails Redlands in the conference standings. The Bulldogs, who have played one more SCIAC series than the Leopards, currently have a 16-5 conference record.
The Sagehens fall to 20-12 overall and 11-7 in the SCIAC.
Hot Streak: The Leopards have won four in a row and seven of their last eight games. La Verne has not lost a SCIAC series this season.
Game One: La Verne 8, Pomona-Pitzer 0
Cody Norman struck out six and allowed just three hits, leading La Verne to a win in Saturday's opener. Norman picked up his fourth win of the year in eight innings of work.
Christopher Peres led La Verne offensively, totaling three RBI, three hits, two runs, and a walk.
Adam Santa Cruz had another standout day at the plate finishing the game 3-4 with an RBI. Santa Cruz currently boats a .408 batting average ranking him second in the SCIAC.
Brandon Vogel and Mauricio Guadarrama both ended the game with a pair of hits and an RBI.
Travis Moffatt stepped onto the bump in the ninth, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
Game Two: La Verne 14, Pomona-Pitzer 4 (8 innings)
The Leopards' bats stayed hot in game two as La Verne finished off the sweep with a mercy-rule win.
Christopher Ligot went 4-5 at the plate with an RBI and three runs scored.
Vogel finished the game with four RBI including three in the seventh when the centerfielder tripled with the bases loaded to extend La Verne's lead to 11-4.
Grant Thompson doubled in his only at bat of the game, hitting a shot to right to bring in Ligot and Jacob Benson.
Guadarrama finished game two with two RBI and two hits. Lukas Granado added a pair of hits.
Nicholas Michaels ended the game in the bottom of the eighth when he singled in Thompson to put his squad up by ten runs.
Peres picked up four walks and scored three times for the Leopards. The junior stepped onto the mound in the eighth and struck out the side.
Hayden Firth pitched five and a third innings and struck out five to pick up the win. Firth keeps his record clean, improving to 5-0.
Next Series: The Leopards next face the Chapman Panthers. La Verne opens the series at home next Friday in a 3 p.m. match-up.
