Baseball wins SCIAC Chamiponship

LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne baseball team completed a sweep over the Whittier College Poets to claim their 21st SCIAC title and first since 2012.

The Leopards share the title with the University of Redlands with both teams finishing the regular season with a SCIAC record of 19-5. Since La Verne beat the Bulldogs two out of three games this season, the Leopards earn the number one seed and will host the SCIAC Postseason Tournament at Ben Hines Field from May 4-6.

La Verne finishes the regular season with an overall record of 28-12.

Tournament: The Leopards will open the SCIAC Postseason Tournament at home against Pomona-Pitzer on Friday, at 3 p.m.

More at Stake: With the conference championship now in hand, La Verne now shifts focus to winning the SCIAC Postseason Tournament to earn conference's automatic qualifying spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Game One: La Verne 10, Whittier 4

Nicholas Michaels had a big game for the Leopards, finishing with four RBI including three coming off a base-clearing triple in the second to give La Verne a 4-2 lead.

La Verne finished the game with 13 hits including two from Jakob Thomas, Adam Santa Cruz, Mauricio Guadarrama, and Michaels. Brandon Vogel finished with a pair of doubles.

Cody Norman struck out six in his start, giving up just one earned run. Travis Moffatt picked up the win, stepping onto the mound in the fifth and striking out one.

Hayden Firth pitched the final three and two-thirds innings for the Leopards, striking out three to earn his second save of the year.

Game Two: La Verne 7, Whittier 6

The La Verne offense kept rolling in game two with the Leopards scoring all of their seven runs in the first inning. 

But Whittier crept back in, getting to within two runs of the Leopards in the fifth inning.

With the Bulldogs defeating Pomona-Pitzer in their match-up, the Leopards needed to hold onto the win to clinch a share of the title. 

In stepped Christopher Peres, who allowed just one run over the final four innings, striking out five batters to pick up his ninth save of the year.

Michaels kept is his bat going, finishing with three hits and an RBI double to give La Verne the opening 1-0 lead.

Gabe Lopez and Vogel each totaled two RBI. Guadarrama also added an RBI.

AJ Jimenez picked up the win.
