Baseball set for SCIAC Tournament

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne baseball team opens the 2019 SCIAC Postseason Tournament tomorrow at Ben Hines Field. The Leopards finished the regular season in second place by virtue of a tiebreaker over Occidental and will host the Tigers with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.

No. 1 seed Chapman will host all games on Saturday and Sunday at Hart Park.

Friday Preview

The Leopards enter the postseason having won 15 of their last 18 games. The squad is led by its four All-SCIAC selections including SCIAC Athlete of the Year Christopher Peres. La Verne will look to Peres to generate runs and close out games on the mound needed

La Verne ace Cody Norman will need to eat up innings when Head Coach Scott Winterburn places him on the mound. The junior enters the postseason with a 2.78 ERA.

Adam Santa Cruz needs to continue to anchor the Leopards' squad. The catcher has shown off his toughness and resiliency recently and will be asked to continue his role as a stable force behind the plate. The junior leads La Verne with 42 RBI and his run production is a necessity for the Leopards to succeed in the tournament.

The Tigers are led by SCIAC Pitcher of the Year Nolan McCarthy. The junior leads the conference with a 1.80 ERA and ranks second with 58 strikeouts. Occidental will look for All-SCIAC selections Jake Fredrickson, Reid Gibbs, Jack Brancheau to create offense.

Saturday, May 11 - All games hosted by Chapman at Hart Park
Game 3: Loser of game 1 v. Loser game 2 - 10 a.m.
Game 4: Winner of game 1 v. Winner of game 2 - 2 p.m.
Game 5: Winner of game 3 v. Loser of game 4 - 6 p.m.

Sunday, May 12 - All games hosted by Chapman at Hart Park
Game 6: Championship Game - 11 a.m. 
Game 7: If necessary - 30 minutes following game 6
