Leopards Go 4-0 during the Bud Knight Invitational

Walla Walla, WA: The University of La Verne Leopards cruised to victory over the Whitworth Pirates, winning 12-2. 

 

The offense was ready-to-go right out of the gates as they scored four runs in the first inning. Brandon Shiota drove in Jacob Barriga to make it 1-0. M Munoz drove home two on a base hit to increase the lead to 3-0. Logan Reese capped off the inning with an RBI single to make it 4-0 Leopards. The Pirates got one back in the bottom of the first inning with a solo homerun to make it 4-1 La Verne. However, the ULV offense continued to roll in the 2nd inning, scoring three more runs. Tanner Siffert drove in a run and then came in to score on a Shiota double making it 6-1 ULV. Cameron Slessor knocked in the third run of the inning afterwards to give La Verne a comfortable 7-1 lead. The Leopards offense would not score again until the 8th and 9th inning where they tacked on five more runs to take the game 12-2 over the Pirates. Gerald Terry pitched 7 stellar innings allowing only two solo homers while striking out four batters en-route to the win. Nick Zolferino added two scoreless innings of relief, picking up two strikeouts.  

Standouts 

Jacob Barriga set the tone at the top of the lineup, going 3-5 and scored three runs. Brandon Shiota collected two hits, scored three times, and knocked in three runs. Cameron Slessor went 3-6 at the plate while scoring twice and driving in two runs. Logan Reese had his 4th 3-hit game of the season while plating a run and scoring once.

 

Game 2 

The University of La Verne Leopards defeated the Whitman Blues by a score of 12-10 early Sunday morning. 

The game began Saturday afternoon but would not conclude until Sunday morning due to weather but La Verne was able to continue their offensive prowess that they showed all weekend and outslugged Whitman 12-10. Whitman jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning, but La Verne countered with an RBI sacrifice fly in the 2nd inning off the bat of Logan Reese to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. The Blues offense continued to hit the Leopards pitching well early on as they tacked on five more runs in the bottom half of the 2nd to take a comfortable 7-1 lead. Fortunately for La Verne their never-say-die attitude allowed them to chip away as they poured on four runs in the 3rd inning, with John Bike, Cameron Slessor, Christian Killian and Reese each driving in a run, trailing now only 7-5. The Blues added a run in the 3rd inning, making it 8-5 after three innings. The Leopards kept up with the Blues, as Bike doubled in Brandon Shiota and Chase Siffert to bring La Verne within one run at 8-7 before the game would be delayed until the following morning. The game resumed early Sunday morning with La Verne tying the game at 8-8 in the top of the 5th inning only to give up the lead in the bottom of the 5th inning. In the 6th inning, the Leopards put up four runs, capped off by a two run fielder's choice by Drew Reddick to bring in Killian and Reese to make it 12-9 La Verne. The Blues and Leopards wild game ended after eight innings with La Verne winning it 12-10. 

Standouts 

John Bike led the Leopards offensively with 3 RBI's on 2-3 hitting. Logan Reese drove in two runs and scored two runs. Alfredo Frey pitched three innings allowing only one run and striking out two batters. The University of La Verne Leopards capped off a successful weekend with a 6-4 win over the Whitworth Pirates and going 4-0 during the Bud Knight Invitational. The Leopards second baseman Chase Siffert came in to score on a balk in the 1st inning to give La Verne a 1-0 lead. The Pirates tied the game 1-1 in the bottom half of the 1st inning on an RBI groundout. Leopards shortstop, Anthony Salcedo, drove in Drew Reddick on an RBI groundout to reclaim the lead for La Verne at 2-1. Whitworth tied the game again, this time with a homerun in the 4th inning, 2-2. With the game tied 2-2 in the 5th inning, Brandon Shiota drove in two runs to give La Verne a 4-2 lead. The Pirates got one run back in the bottom of the 5th only for La Verne to add another two runs in the 6th inning with Chase Siffert doubling in Salcedo and Reddick, making it 6-3 and eventually winning the game 6-4. 

 Standouts 

Chase Siffert went 2-4 and drove in two runs while scoring once. Drew Reddick went 2-3 and scored three runs. Alfredo Frey went 1.2 scoreless innings, picking up the save.  

Next Up

The University of La Verne Leopards will play host to the Chapman Panthers on Friday. First pitch is set for 3:00 PM. This will be game one of the final three-game series of the SCIAC regular season. Both teams will be competing for a SCIAC Regular Season Championship.
