FOOTBALL: La Verne Suffers Road Setback At Cal Lutheran

The University of La Verne's hopes for a .500 finish in SCIAC play were upended by Cal Lutheran University, who raced to a 31-0 halftime advantage on its way to a 37-3 triumph over the Leopards in conference action Saturday at Mt. Clef Stadium in Thousand Oaks.

The Kingsmen defense proved formidable in limiting La Verne to 195 total yards on offense while collecting 5 sacks on the day.  CLU also received a strong effort from quarterback Jericho Toilolo, who passed for 250 yards and 4 touchdowns.

La Verne (2-6, 2-4 SCIAC) got its only points in the third quarter on a 31-yard field goal by Wesley Dean.  The 8-play, 50-yard scoring drive was highlighted by the Leos' longest play from scrimmage on a 47-yard pass from Anthony Andre to Kenneth Chapman.

Cal Lutheran (6-2, 4-1) led 7-0 entering the second quarter after scoring on its first possession as Toilolo found Derek Martinez for a 15-yard touchdown at the 9:15 mark of the first quarter.  From there, the Kingsmen reeled off 24 straight points heading into intermission.

A 33-yard field goal by Jackson Damron put CLU 10-0 with 10:06 remaining.  The Kingsmen would follow with touchdowns on three of their next four possessions as the Leopard offense failed to record a first down during that span.  Toilolo connected with Danny Hernandez for a 50-yard score and would hook up with Christian Edwards for touchdown passes of 9 and 6 yards to take a 31-0 lead into the locker room.

Toilolo was 13-of-25 through the air in the victory.  CLU running back Bobby Rodrigues finished with a game-high 54 yards on the ground.  For La Verne, Andre completed 10 of his 19 pass attempts for 90 yards.

Defensively, La Verne linebacker Jason Carpenter registered a team-high 8 tackles including a sack.  Cornerback Ryan Figgs had the game's only interception, picking off a Kingsmen pass early in the fourth quarter.

La Verne will close out the regular season against non-conference rival Chapman University in Orange.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm.
