La Verne Earns Conference Win In Double-Dip
The University of La Verne men's water polo team held its final
matches of the season at home this Sunday morning against the Air
Force Falcons and Caltech Beavers. While the Leopards dropped the
first match 17-7 to the Falcons, La Verne would turn the score
around and win a 17-7 final against the Beavers.
The Leopards opened the day by hosting the #15 ranked Falcons in
Division I water polo and kept the game close after the first two
quarters. John Roche netted three goals, and La Verne trailed 5-3
heading into halftime. Roche, Sean Steele, Emerson Gant, Arturo
Villalpando added goals for the Leopards, but Air Force would
outscore La Verne 12-4 in the second half, and take a 17-7
final.
La Verne would hold its final conference match against the Beavers
a few hours later, and got out to a quick 4-1 first quarter lead
thanks to goals from Steele, Mark Wilson, Anthony Rivera and Matt
McDowell. Roche added another score in the second quarter, while
Andrew Mackay netted two and Spencer Contreras logged three, giving
the Leopards a 10-3 lead at halftime.
Wilson scored La Verne's first goal of the second half, and Emerson
Gant, Matt Johnson and Scott Jones added to the La Verne lead.
Johnson scored twice in the final quarter to give the Leopards a
17-7 victory.
The Leopards finish with a 1-6 record in SCIAC and 4-20 overall. La
Verne will now gear up for the conference postseason tournament
held at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, where they will face the number two
seed Redlands Bulldogs. The Bulldogs were ranked second in Division
III water polo, and topped the Leopards early in the season with a
19-8 victory. The Leopards' Friday match will begin at 9:00am.
