Football falls to Redlands

LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne football team was handed a 64-28 defeat by Redlands Saturday afternoon at Ortmayer Stadium as the Bulldogs racked up 297 yards and six touchdowns on the ground.

How it happened: La Verne came out of the gates firing.

On the Leopards' first possession, quarterback William Livingston went 5-for-5 for 32 yards to drive La Verne up the field and running back Travis Sparks capped off the drive with a strong 13-yard run up the middle to put the Leopards up, 7-0.

La Verne defense forced a three-and-out on the ensuing Redlands possession and Livingston was perfect once again on La Verne's second drive. The junior completed passes of 12, 18 and 8 yards to different receivers and punctuated the drive with a 30-yard strike to Andres Fernandez to give La Verne a two-touchdown lead with 5:58 left in the first quarter.

It was all Redlands from there.

The Bulldogs ripped of 43 unanswered points to run away to a 43-14 lead at the break. Sean Murray started the run with a 46-yard field goal and six different Bulldogs found the pay dirt.

The Leopards stopped the bleeding with tight end Chris Gura's first touchdown reception of his career with 11:18 left in the third but Redlands responded with two more touchdowns to stamp out any comeback attempt.

Players of the game: Alex Villalobos caught 10 passes for 56 yards and a touchdown and Andres Fernandez hauled in four passes for 68 yards and a score as well.

Anthony Arguello led the way on defense. The senior notched 12 total tackles, forced a fumble and had two pass breakups.

Up next: La Verne returns to action Saturday at No. 25 Chapman. The kickoff is scheduled at 7 p.m.
