Lilly, Sparks reach benchmarks in finale at Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Jonathan Lilly hauled in six passes for 92 yards to pass the 1,000 yards receiving mark and Travis Sparks exploded for 250 yards on 13 carries to break 1,000 yards rushing on the season.

But the University of La Verne football team could not match Cal Lutheran's offensive output in a 50-21 loss in its season finale at William Rolland Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

La Verne finishes 2-7 overall and 1-6 in SCIAC play.

Lilly, a senior who really started to come on last year, passed Bill Battin '95 in career reception yards, moving up to No. 2 all-time. Lilly ends his career with 1,855 yards, behind only Maurice Harper '84 (2,092). The Lake Elsinore native added a 14-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter from Justin Gomez against the Kingsmen.

After serving as La Verne all-time leading rusher Matthew Biggers' understudy for two years, Sparks had a breakout season and capped it off with the best single-game performance of his career. The junior had five rushes for 20 or more yards and broke the plane late in the third quarter with a 38-yard scamper.

Cal Lutheran put the game away with a 31 unanswered points after Alex Villalobos tied it at 7-7 with a 12-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter.

The Leopards had trouble checking the Kingsmen offense, giving up 573 yards of total offense.

On offensive side of the ball, La Verne had a hard time stopping Cal Lutheran's pass rush and give up six sacks.

Cal Lutheran quarterback Nick Isham completed 21 of 36 passes for 316 yards and four touchdowns while adding a team-high 66 yards on the ground to lead the Kingsmen attack.

David Apodaca led all defensive players with nine tackles for La Verne. Connor Truhitte and Anthony Arguello each had eight tackles and a pass breakup. Alejandro Restrepo notched five tackles and had an interception.
