Football opens SCIAC play against Cal Lutheran

The University of La Verne Football team opens SCIAC play against the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen at home Saturday night.

The Details:

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Stadium: Ortmayer Stadium, La Verne, Calif.

La Verne (1-1, 0-0 SCIAC); Complete Schedule

Cal Lutheran (2-0, 0-0 SCIAC); Complete Schedule

The Match-up:

La Verne is coming off a bye week after dropping their second game of the season to No. 15 Whitworth two weeks ago. The Leopards opened the season with a 33-25 win over Puget Sound on September 2. Cal Lutheran beat Northwest Conference opponent Willamette 28-13 their last time out.

Last Season:

The Kingsmen handed La Verne a 45-13 loss last season at Rolland Stadium in Thousand Oaks.

Recent Series:

Cal Lutheran leads the recent series 4-1 against the Leopards. La Verne's last win over the Kingsmen came in 2015 when they beat Cal Lutheran 28-21 at home on their way to a SCIAC Championship.

Who to watch:

Quarterback Josh Evans passed for nearly 200 yards in last year's matchup. Expect the quarterback to bounce back from the Leopards' loss to Whitworth and lead La Verne through the air.

On the defensive side, look for safety Josh Padilla to slow the Kingsmen offensive attack. The sophomore leads the Leopards with 22 tackles and one pick this season.

Adam Friederichsen will be leading Cal Lutheran's offense. The quarterback has averaged 281.5 yards passing through the Kingsmen's first two games.

What's at stake:

Both teams are looking to get off to a 1-0 start to SCIAC play. In what should be a competitive conference title race, an opening win will go a long way towards aiding postseason hopes for both squads.
