Football looks to start SCIAC 2-0 at Redlands

The Univerity of La Verne football team heads to the University of Redlands Saturday night looking for a 2-0 start in SCIAC play.

The Match-Up:

Both teams head into Saturday's match-up with identical records. The Leopards are coming off an exciting come from behind 28-27 win over the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen last week at Ortmayer Stadium. The Leopards rallied for a 14-point fourth quarter to start SCIAC play 1-0.

The Bulldogs opened SCIAC play with a resounding 72-13 on the road against the Occidental College Tigers. Redlands opened the season with a 32-7 win over Trinity (Tex.). They suffered their only loss to Northwest Conference opponent George Fox on the road.

Last Season: 

The Bulldogs handed the Leopards a 49-14 loss last season at Ortmayer Stadium. 

Recent Series: 

Redlands leads the recent series between the two squads 4-1. The Leopards last win came during their 2015 SCIAC Championship season in a 49-42 shootout at Redlands.

Who to Watch:

The Leopards' defense unit will look to lead La Verne on the road. The Leopards held Cal Lutheran to just 29 rushing yards on 27 rushing attempts. The unit also forced two takeaways and totaled six sacks in the game. 

Look for Alex Olivas, who lead La Verne with 11 sacks to have a big game. 

Redlands enters the game with a balanced offensive attack that's averaging 204.3 yards per game on the ground and 248 yards per game through the air. Situational quarterback Nathan Martinez leads his team with three rushing touchdowns.

What's at Stake:

Both teams are looking for a 2-0 start in SCIAC play to take command it should be to be a tight conference race.
