Leopards wrap up season at Chapman

ORANGE, CA — It was a back-and-forth offensive battle in Orange County that featured over 1,000 yards of offense and 13 touchdowns.

The Leopards had their highest offensive output of the season, but couldn't keep the Chapman Panthers out of the end zone enough to come away with the win, falling on the road 55-34.

La Verne finishes the 2018 season 3-6 overall and 3-4 in the SCIAC. Chapman ends the year 5-4 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

The Leopards racked 494 yards of offense in the game, 361 of those on the ground. Martaveous Holliday and James Gonsalves both rushed for more than 100 yards in the same game for the third time this season.

Holliday led the way with 136 yards and a pair of scores. Gonsalves added 132 yards and one touchdown coming on a 80 yard scamper that cut the Panthers lead to just one point midway through the second quarter. Gonsalves ends the year as La Verne's leading rusher with 848 yards, ranking him third in the SCIAC. His eight touchdowns put him in a tie for second in the conference.

It was all offense in the first half. At one point, the Leopards and Panthers were going blow for blow, scoring a combined six straight touchdowns.

The turning point in the game came at the end of the first half. Starting on their own 22 yard line, Chapman put together a nine play drive culminating in an Ian Fieber touchdown pass to Jacob Baker to give the Panthers a 35-20 lead at the break. Chapman used two more scores early in the third quarter to pull away.

Jordan Peevy led the Leopards with eight tackles and added his second interception in as many games. Linebacker Conner Johnson totaled six tackles and one breakup. Fellow linebacker Preston Carr added five tackles with two of them coming behind the line of scrimmage.
