Football Opens Season at D1 San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CA — The University of La Verne football team traveled south to open the 2022 season against NCAA Division I opponent the University of San Diego.

The Leopards couldn't keep pace with the Toreros, falling 58-0 Saturday afternoon. The game marked the first time the Leopards had played an NCAA Division I opponent since 2003, also against San Diego.

Miguel Aguero Jr. led La Verne with 90 yards passing on 15 completions. Spencer Pool finished with 42 receiving yards.

The Leopards battled with the Toreros early, forcing three punts and a missed field goal on San Diego's opening four drives. But San Diego found their rhythm after that scoring on their next nine possessions.

Returning All-SCIAC linebacker Derek Guzman led the Leopards with nine tackles. Oscar Montenegro and JJ Rider each added five tackles.

Quarterback Judd Erickson led San Deigo with 228 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns.

La Verne returns to division three competition next week when they travel to Willamette on Saturday for a noon showdown against the Bearcats.
