Woodland Joins The 1,000 Point Club, But Bulldogs Rally For Overtime Victory

Boxscore

Trevor Woodland reached 1,000 career points but it wasn't enough as the University of Redlands rallied to force overtime, then outscore the Leopards  19-14 in the extra session for a 91-86 verdict  in SCIAC men's basket ball action Wednesday night.

Redlands trailed by five points with under two minutes remaining but were able to draw even in the final seconds to send the game into extra time.  The Bulldogs scored the first five points in OT and led by as many as nine points on their way to victory.

Woodland, who finished with a team-high 25 points, scored 16 of his total by halftime en route to joining the 1,000 point club.  Entering the game needing eight points to reach the mark, Woodland buried a three-pointer with 5:11 remaining in the first half to eclipse the 1,000 point mark.

A product of Damien High School, Woodland joins teammate Austin Napolitano as the program's newest members into the 1,000 point club.

But teams traded the lead in the first half before the Leos took a 39-36 edge into the locker room.  The game would continue to be a back-and-forth affair throughout the second half.

A short jumper from redlands' Jack Colston tied the game at 62 with 7:07 remaining. The two teams went scoreless for nearly two minutes before Jeremy Lay buried a three-pointer with 5:09 left to put the Leos up by three at 65-62.

Jonathan Bastos hit a pair of free throws to push the Leopard advantage to 71-66 with 1:34 left, but a Colston layup at 1:11 followed by a layup from Josiah Brensdal with 29 seconds remaining cut the deficit to a point at 71-70.  Jordan Simmonds made one of two free throws to give La Verne a two-point lead, but the Bulldogs drew even on a Colston layup with 14.6 left to knot the game at 72, eventually sending the game into overtime.

Colston led Redlands with a game-high 27 points.

La Verne went seven seasons without a 1,000 point scorer in the program before witnessing both Napolitano and Woodland reach the milestone in the span of a week.  Napolitano hit the 1,000 point mark last week against Occidental College.
