Leos split games at Hoopsville Classic in Maryland

OWINGS MILLS, MD.-The University of La Verne men's basketball team split a pair of games at the Hoopsville National Invitational Classic over the weekend. 

The Leopards (3-1) kicked off play with a 66-63 win over Ohio Wesleyan University (1-1) Friday. In a game marked by three ties and six lead changes, the Leos held a narrow 33-31 lead at halftime. After giving up the lead early in the second half, the Leos tied the score at 50 with 9:19 remaining before building a lead to secure the victory.

Freshman guard/forward Kendall McClain came off the bench to lead the La Verne offense, draining five three-pointers on eight attempts to score 15 points. Senior guard Ron See had 14 points and seven rebounds, while senior point guard Alonzo Young had seven rebounds and five assists. Senior forward Eric Becker made three blocks.

The Leopards were 23-of-59 (39 percent) from the field, including 7-of-19 from three-point range, and outrebounded the Bishops 42-39.

In Saturday's contest, La Verne got off to a slow start against Keystone College (Pa.) (2-2), going down 10-2 before scraping back to a 38-35 deficit going into the break. The Leopards kept it within single digits, but could not break through against the Giants, falling 73-64.

See racked up 14 points, while Young had seven points, three assists and four rebounds. Becker tallied ten points and four rebounds.

The Leos shot 25-of-57 from the field and held advantages in rebounds (33-28), assists (12-6) and points in the paint (34-28).

La Verne is off until a Dec. 5 tilt at UC-Riverside. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
