White, McClain combine for 50 to lead La Verne past Colorado College 94-81

LA VERNE, Calif. — Anthony White poured in a career-high 29 points, Kendall McClain tied his career-high with 21 and the University of La Verne men's basketball team got back on the win column with a 94-81 victory over Colorado College on Wednesday afternoon at Sports Science and Athletic Pavilion.

La Verne (6-3) was without top scorer Hakim Arnold and sixth man Cruz Mertens but looked no worse for the wear. White was 9 of 20 from the field and sank seven 3-pointers. McClain was 8 of 13 with five treys while hauling in six rebounds and giving out five assists.

After a close start to the game, the Leopards went on a run of 13 straight points over a 3-minute span in the second half to take control of the game. Evan Gustafson started the streak with a putback layup with 10:49 left and White punctuated it with a three at the 7:42 mark as the Leopards went 5-of-7 from the field during the stretch. The Tigers (2-8) never got any closer than within 12 points the rest of the way.

After trailing for most of the first half, the Tigers ended the opening half on a 10-3 run to take a 2-point lead into the break and opened their largest lead of the game early in the second as an Eric Houska layup put them up 52-47. But McClain hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Leopards back up 61-58 with 13:41 to go and White hit another long-range shot on La Verne's next possession to set the stage for the big run.

Connor Head scored 13 points and gave out six assists for the Leopards. Jordan Stokes also chipped in 13 points and grabbed four rebounds.

Colorado College's John Hatch was the most efficient player on the court, scoring 28 points on 8-of-11 shooting to go with 13 rebounds and three blocks but it wasn't enough for the Tigers. Houska finished with 27 points, six rebounds and nine assists.

La Verne begins SCIAC action next Tuesday on the road at Redlands. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
