La Verne downs Redlands in SCIAC opener 99-73

REDLANDS, Calif. — Anthony White scored 21 points, Jordan Stokes had 17 points and nine rebounds and the La Verne men's basketball team cruised to a 99-73 win in Tuesday night's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Redlands (4-6) opened the game with a three but La Verne responded with back-to-back baskets and the Leopards never trailed the rest of the way.

The Leopards (7-3) broke the game open with an 11-1 run that started at the 8:46 mark in the first half. Hakim Arnold flushed a fast break dunk during the stretch and Brandon Rice capped off the run with an and-1 off a tip-in to give the Leopards a 38-24 lead.

Redlands briefly made it interesting with a run of nine unanswered points in the second half that cut the lead to 59-51 with 11:25 left in the game. But White went 4-for-4 including a 3-pointer in the next two minutes to lead a 12-3 La Verne run and the Leopards continued pouring it on for the rest of the game as they stretched the lead to as much as 30 points.

La Verne controlled the pace on both ends. The Leopards made 37 of 68 field goals (54.4 percent) on 19 assists and sank 10 of 23 3-point attempts (43.5 percent). La Verne held the Bulldogs to just 33.8 percent shooting while forcing 15 turnovers that turned into 24 easy points on the other end.

White was 9-of-16 from the field with three 3-pointers and also grabbed six rebounds. Arnold finished with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting and dished out three assists.

Trevor Baker led Redlands with 16 points. Blake O'Brien and Joey Sponheim each added 12 points.

The Leopards are back in action on Thursday night at Chapman.
