La Verne topples No. 14 CMS, Reed claims 100th win

LA VERNE, Calif. — Kendall McClain scored 19 points, Anthony White added 17 and the La Verne men's basketball team claimed a 75-68 upset win over No. 14 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for head coach Richard Reed's 100th career win on Saturday night at Sports Science and Athletic Pavilion.

"I'm just happy for our guys whether this was win number 199 or 65, it doesn't matter," Reed said. "If I won 100 games it's because I coached a lot of great players in 10 years. I'm just really happy for our guys to come out and gut out that win."

The win also clinches a spot in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament for the Leopards. La Verne improves to 15-7 overall and 9-4 in SCIAC play. CMS drops to 18-3 and 11-2.

With the game tied at 48-48 with 8:41 left to go, the Leopards went on a 7-1 run to grab control. Jordan Stokes got the streak started with a 3-point play, Cruz Mertens scored four points and Kendall McClain capped off the run with a tough layup to give the Leopards a 57-49 lead.

The Stags got within 67-64 on a deep 3-pointer by Miles President with 1:22 left but Hakim Arnold answered with a contested layup on the ensuing possession and the Leopards made enough free throws to ice the game.

Stokes did a yeoman's work inside, posting nine points and 11 rebounds. Connor Head went a perfect 3-for-3 from downtown for nine points and also dished out four assists. Arnold finished with nine points, six rebounds and three assists.

Michael Scarlett led all players with 26 points for CMS. Kendrick Morris contributed 12 points, President finished with 11 and Riley Hall scored 10.

The Leopards are back in action on Thursday at Caltech.
