La Verne falls at Cal Lutheran, 113-87

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Hakim Arnold had 18 points and eight rebounds and Kendall McClain scored 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting.

But the La Verne basketball team had a hard time stopping Cal Lutheran's offense and fell 113-87 on Saturday at Gilbert Arena.

La Verne falls to 10-5 in SCIAC play (16-8 overall) and falls one game behind Cal Lutheran, who improves to 11-5 (18-6 overall), in the SCIAC standings.

Cal Lutheran couldn't miss from the the field. The Kingsmen shot a season-high 62.2 percent, making 46 of 74 shots, and went 9-for-16 from downtown (56.3 percent). Austin Cole led the way with 22 points, Wolfgang Wood scored 21 and Kyle Ferreira added 20. Caleb Richey scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Kingsmen jumped out to a quick nine-point lead through the first seven minutes of play but the Leopards chipped away at the lead and trimmed the lead to a single point on a layup by Victor Costa with 6:07 to go in the first half. But Cal Lutheran closed the half on 14-5 run to take a 56-44 lead going into the break.

The Leopards kept pace for the first 10 minutes of the second half but just couldn't put together enough stops.

Anthony White chipped in 12 points and six rebounds. Evan Gustafson posted nine points and five rebounds off the bench.

The Leopards wrap up the regular season on Tuesday at home against Whittier.
