Leopards' OT Heave Just Misses

LA VERNE, CA  — Jarid Taylor got off a hook shot with the final ticks of the clock winding down and it looked like the University of La Verne men's basketball team would celebrate the new year with a home win over visiting Caltech.

But the ball rattled around the rim and out as the Beavers escaped with a 77-76 overtime win.

With 19 seconds left in overtime and the Leopards and the Leopards trailing by two, Sinai Enoch drove down the lane and laid in a contested layup plus the foul. The sophomore finished the three-point play at the line to give La Verne the 76-75 lead.

Caltech answered on the other end with guard Marcus Gee downing what proved to be the winning basket with nine seconds remaining.

Enoch led the Leopards with 18 points in the game to go with four rebounds. Taylor finished with a double-double totaling 17 points and 10 rebounds to go with one assist and one steal.

Jordan Allen added 12 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Tevin McClain added 10 points off the bench on 4-5 shooting with five rebounds, and one assist. Isaiah Knox grabbed four boards and scored six points. 

The Beavers were led by Gee's 18 points and Pavlos Stavrinides 17 points. 

Both teams struggled to gain control for in a game that featured 16 lead changes.

Caltech improves to 3-7 overall and 1-0 in the SCIAC. The Leopards move to 0-10 overall and 0-2 in conference action.

Next Game

The Leopards get back to action Monday when they host Redlands at 7 p.m.
