Golf Lands Four on All-SCIAC Teams

PASADENA, Calif. — Paul Gomez, Keven Holliday, Kelby Scharmann and Alec Spencer of the University of La Verne golf team were selected to All-SCIAC teams, the league office announced on Wednesday. Scharmann and Spencer were named to First Team while Gomez and Holliday earned Second Team honors.

Spencer, a freshman, emerged as one of the best players in the conference. For the first two rounds of the 2014 SCIAC Championship Tournament, Spencer went stroke-for-stroke with the reigning national champion and Jack Nicklaus Award winner Bradley Shigezawa of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps before the wind kicked up in the final round. Spencer placed fifth (72-72=144) at the SCIAC No. 1 and tied for 11th at the SCIAC No. 2 (78-72=150).

After a relatively slow start at the SCIAC No. 1, where he finished in 30th place (78-78=156), Scharmann roared back to win the second SCIAC regular season tournament with a two-round score of 138 (65-73).  Scharmann finished eighth overall at the Championships (74-73-84=231).

Gomez provided championship experience and showed senior leadership at the championships. Whenever it looked as if the Leopards would fall out of contention, Gomez made a big shot after another—including three eagles—to keep La Verne in contention until the very end. Gomez finished tied for 24th at the SCIAC No. 1 (78-75=153) and 11th at the second tournament (70-80=150).

Holliday probably has been the most consistent golfer for La Verne. The senior finished 15th at the SCIAC No. 1 (74-74=148) and fourth at the SCIAC No. 2 (72-70=142) before placing 18th at the SCIAC Championships (78-81-81=240).

In addition the all-conference team honors, Spencer and Holliday garnered individual awards as well. Spencer was named the Ken Sherman Freshman of the Year and Holliday received the Jesse Clark Sportsmanship Award, given to the golfer that best demonstrates good sportsmanship and fair play on the course.

The Leopards will travel to Greensboro, N.C., on May 13-16 for the 2014 NCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championships.
