Golf Finishes Sixth at NCAA Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The University of La Verne golf team capped off its season with a sixth place finish Friday afternoon in the NCAA Championships at the Grandover Resort. Junior Kelby Scharmann (76-74-70-73=293, +5) led the Leopards on the individual leaderboard and finished tied for seventh place overall.

Scharmann carded La Verne's low score in the last two rounds, including a 2-under 70 in the third round in which he grabbed four birdies.

Just as it did at the SCIAC Championships, the weather was a factor, especially in the last two rounds. The start of the third round was pulled forward one hour and play was suspended for about two hours mid-round. Only two teams shot under 300 total in the third round (Redlands, Rochester) and only one did so in the final round (Redlands).

Keven Holliday led the way for La Verne in first round. Holliday sank four birdies and shot a two-under 70 to tie for fifth place individually after the first 18 holes. But the senior trailed off in the later rounds and finished with an 18-over 306 (70-78-77-81), placing 45th overall.

Alec Spencer was the low scorer for the Leopards in round two, signing for a 1-under 71. After double-bogeying the opening hole, the freshman rattled in five birdies without losing a shot in the next 11 holes. Spencer finished with a 14-over 302 and tied for 31st overall.

Paul Gomez (76-74-77-79=306) and Michael Bonicatto (81-75-80-86=322) tied for 45th and came in 77th, respectively.

Schreiner (Texas) University (285-293-302-305=1185, +33) led wire-to-wire to claim the team championship.

Bobby Holden of Redlands ran away with the individual medalist honors with a four-round score of 9-under 279. The second place finisher Cheyne Kendall of Schreiner shot an even 288.
