Men's Golf Takes Fifth at Cal State Intercollegiate

HEMET, Calif. — No. 6 University of La Verne men's golf team finished in fifth position with a three-round total of 881 (291-302-288) in the season-opening California State Collegiate Invitational on Sept. 21-23.

All-American Kelby Scharmann led the Leopards with an even-par 216 (69-75-72). Scharmann was tied for second after the first round with a three-under 69 before shooting a 75 and 72 in the second and third, respectively.

Freshman Dominic Reed made an immediate impact and finished in a tie for 11th. The Houston, Texas native played steady golf all tournament and finished right behind Scharmann with a score of two-over 218. Reed has the low round for La Verne on the final day with a score of 70.

"Dominic played a great final round," La Verne head coach Chris Davis said. "He had it to four-under at one point, but for him to lead the team with a 70 in the final round as a freshman was fantastic."

Andrew Cooper, another freshman who competed as an individual, registered the fourth-best card of the tournament with a total score of 228. Cooper posted a lower score each day. He carded an 80 in the first round, a 76 in the second and an even-par 72 in the final round.

Senior Trent Twamley started out slow, shooting a 12-over 84 in the first round, but regrouped and posted solid rounds the rest of the way. Twamley shot a one-over 73 on Day Two and went one-under 71 on the final day.

"Trent eliminated the big numbers and sneaked in a couple more putts in the last round," Davis said.

The 2014 SCIAC Freshman of the Year Alec Spencer rounded out the Leopards' scoring with a total score of 231 (75-81-75).

Cal State San Marcos ran away with the team title with an 18-under 846 (286-285-275). SCIAC rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps finished second (287-292-288).

"I am very proud of the adjustments we were able to make in the final round," Davis said. "If we can find a way to start our tournaments with a bit more poise and confidence, we will be in a position to compete in the Spring."
