Scharmann ties for first, Men’s Golf fourth at SCIAC 1

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — Kelby Scharmann claimed a share of the medalist honors with a two-round score of 146 at SCIAC No. 1 (par-72), but the rest of the No. 15 University of La Verne men's golf team showed early season jitters to settle for a fourth-place team finish.

Scharmann jumped to the top of the leaderboard after shooting a one-under 71 in the first round, but slipped on Sunday with a score of 75 to tie Barrett McGinnis of Cal Lutheran for first place.

The 2014 SCIAC Newcomer of the Year Alec Spencer had a solid start, shooting 77 in the first round, but also trailed off on the second day to record a two-day total of 15-over 159 (77-82). Spencer finished 13th overall.

Trent Twamly and Michael Bonicatto each carded an 18-over 162 to round out La Verne's scoring. Twamley started slow with a 13-over 85 on the first day, but came back to shoot a 77 in round two. Bonicatto shot a 79 on Saturday and came in with a 83 on Sunday. They finished tied for 18th.

Austin Matzaganian, who showed well at the season-opening dual against Pomona-Pitzer last weekend, posted a 19-over 163 (83-80) and Justin Smith booked a 26-over 170.

Redlands (293-306=599) posted the best team score on the strength of five top-eight finishes and staked out to an early lead for the SCIAC Championship.
