GREENSBORO, N.C. — Kelby Scharmann of the University of La Verne men's golf team drilled four birdies on his five holes for a four-under 68 in the third round of the 2015 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship and jumped back to the top of the individual leaderboard at -7 overall.

Scharmann started his round from the 10th tee Wednesday and made the turn even, but caught fire down the stretch. He chased down to tie Anthony Maccaglia of Oglethorpe, the 2012 NCAA Tournament medalist, who was one-under Wednesday.

The Leopards as team finished strong as well after getting off to a slow start. La Verne shot 18 strokes over par with just three birdies on the front nine but its four scorers combined to shoot four-over to shoot 304 for the round. The Leopards made 11 birdies as a team on the back nine with six of them coming in the last two holes.

Alec Spencer birdied three of his last four holes to finish at five-over 77. Trent Twamley shot a seven-over 79 and Michael Bonicatto carded an eight-over 80 to round out La Verne's scoring. Justin Smith came in with a 17-over 89.

Berry College shot 292 as a team Wednesday to claim a one-stroke lead over hard-charging Wittenberg University. Wittenberg posted the day's low score with a one-under 287 and moved into second place, one stroke off the lead.

Friday's fourth and final round starts at 8:00 a.m. Friday on Grandover's East Course. The Leopards start at 8:50 a.m. from the 10th
