Davis steps down as Golf coach

LA VERNE, Calif. — University of La Verne head men's and women's golf coach Christopher Davis '08 announced his resignation on Friday after three years in charge. Davis served as the head coach of the Leopards from 2012-15, leading the Leopards to national championship appearance all three seasons and guiding Kelby Scharmann '15 to an individual national title in 2015.

"I am honored and proud to have been a part of our historic golf program," Davis said. "I want to thank everyone at the University of La Verne for always supporting our teams. Most of all, I'll miss the association with our athletes. It's been an honor to go to work with them every day."

After taking over in 2012, Davis continued tradition of success for the men's golf team. In his first year, the Leopards claimed their seventh SCIAC championship in a row before finishing eighth at the 2013 NCAA National Championships. La Verne narrowly missed out on SCIAC Championships in 2014 and 2015, but still managed to earn bids to national championships and made the cut every year.

Davis's crowning achievement as a coach came in 2015 when Scharmann became La Verne's first-ever national champion. Scharmann won the individual medalist honors after shooting a nine-under 279 at the 2015 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship.

During his tenure, Davis mentored one SCIAC Athlete of the Year, three All-Americans, and six First Team All-SCIAC selections in men's golf. Davis also oversaw the launch La Verne's women's golf program in 2014.

A standout student-athlete at La Verne, Davis earned All-America honors for the Leopards during his junior and senior seasons in 2007 and 2008.  In addition, he was a four-time First Team All-SCIAC selection (2005-08) and a member of two SCIAC Championship squads in 2007 and 2008.

"We thank Chris for his service to our young people, his alma mater and to our department," athletics director Julie Kline said. "We wish him the best in all his future endeavors."
