Spencer leads No. 14 Men’s Golf at Cal State Intercollegiate

HEMET, Calif. — Alec Spencer shot a three-round total score of 223 to finish tied for 11th and pace the University of La Verne men's golf team at the annual California State Intercollegiate Tournament on Sept. 21-22. The Leopards finished seventh as a team (311-313-204=928).

Spencer, who will take on a leadership role this season after participating in the last two NCAA National Championships, was steady all event. The junior shot an identical 2-over 74 in the first two rounds on Monday and wrapped up the tournament with a 3-over 75 on Tuesday to finish 7-over par.

Austin Matzaganian posted the team's best round of the week when he shot an even-par 72 in the final round. He finished 31st overall (80-83-72=235).

Evan Zhang also registered his best score of the tournament on the final day, shooting a 77 after carding an identical 80 in the first two rounds. Zhang came in tied for 33rd overall (80-80-77=237).

Newcomer Aaron Digiamarino rounded out the Leopards' scoring lineup with a total score of 240 (77-77-86).

Three other newcomers competed as individuals for La Verne and all flashed potential. Josh Davis finished 41st overall with a total score of 242 (82-82-80) and Jim Nicholson was right behind in 42nd place (82-82-80-244). Hisham Hussein bookended an impressive second round score of 76 with a 102 on the first day and an 86 in the final round.

SCIAC rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps claimed the team title with a 10-over 874 (294-294-286).
