ANAHEIM — Junior Alec Spencer won his second tournament of the season and the first SCIAC tournament of his career to lead the University of La Verne men's golf team to a third-place finish at SCIAC No. 2 on Sunday at Anaheim Hills Golf Course (par-70).

With its third-place finish, La Verne moves up one spot in the composite SCIAC leaderboard with a total score of 1250 through the first two SCIAC tournaments. The Leopards trail the leader Claremont-Mudd-Scripps by 36 shots, but have made up a similar difference in a single tournament before. In 2014, the Leopards found themselves 34 strokes behind the leader Redlands after SCIAC No. 1 but erased the deficit in one fell swoop at SCIAC No. 2.

Spencer shot a two-round total of 141 to win his second tournament in a row. The San Diego native fired a three-under 67 to lead the field by four storkes after the first round and despite slowing down on Sunday with a 74, used the early cushion for the individual medalist honors.

Sam Mangiaterra and Hisham Hussein both finished tied for 17th. The newcomers shot an identical 75-75 for a total of 150.

Aaron DiGiamarino rounded out La Verne's scoring lineup with a total score of 151 and finished tied for 22nd. He shot a seven-over 77 in the first round and carded a 74 in the second.

Austin Matzaganian got off to a good start with a 74 but posted an 80 in the second round to settle for 31st place.

As a team, the Leopards shot 589 (291-298) to finish six strokes behind winner No. 16 Cal Lutheran (292-291=583).

The Leopards will conclude their regular season at the 2016 SCIAC Championship at Oak Valley Golf Club on April 24-26.
