Spencer leads Men's Golf at WNMU Fall Intercollegiate

GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Alec Spencer placed sixth overall to lead the University of La Verne men's golf team at the Western New Mexico University Fall Intercollegiate tournament that featured top NCAA Division II and NAIA competition.

La Verne and SCIAC rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps were the only NCAA Division III teams in a field of 20 competing at the par-72 Golf Club of Estrella.

Spencer didn't show any nerves against upper-division competition and played like a true anchor. He shot a one-over 73 in the first round on Monday and came right back with a two-over 74 in the second round in the same day. He was two-under at the turn today but bogeyed two of the final four holes to finsh with an even-par 72 in the final round. He hit a total 3-over 219 for the tournament.

The rest of the Leopards started out on fire before cooling down. La Verne was tied for fourth after the first round but fell back in the second round as it battled with fatigue and darkness.

Sam Mangiaterra sank an incredible five birdies in his first six holes in the first round but had three double-bogeys to finish at an even 72 and was tied for seventh after the first round. But he ran into trouble in the second as he finished with an 87 before bouncing back in the final round with a 76. He finished tied for 72nd

Aaron DiGiamarino also finished with an even 72 in the first round as he made four birdies. He posted an 82 in the second round and an 86 in the final round to finish tied for 84th.

Austin Matzaganian shot an 78 in the first round, an 82 in the second and wrapped up the tourney with a 79.

Freshman Jason Brown rounded out the lineup with a three-round total of 268.

Cal Baptist won the team title (295-294-292=881) and Domenick Postorino of Arizona Christian finished first indivdually (69-70-72=211).

The Leopards conclude their fall schedule and will return to action in Spring 2017. Full schedule will be available in October.
