Men's Golf finishes ninth at Folino Invitational

INDUSTRY, Calif. — The La Verne men's golf team finished ninth overall in a field comprised entirely of NCAA Division I teams at the Folino Invitational, hosted by Cal State Fullerton, at Industry Hills Golf Club (par-72, 7211 yards) on Jan. 30-31.

In a play-five, score-four format, the Leopards shot a total of 926 (311-317-298).

Alec Spencer paced the Leopards, finishing tied for 25th individually with a total score of 226. The senior shot a 1-under 71 in the final round on Tuesday, which was tied for second lowest in the round. He registered a 2-over 74 in the first round on Monday morning before shooting a 9-over 81 that afternoon.

Josh Davis finished second among the Leopards with a score of 231 and finished tied for 35th overall. Davis led Spencer by a stroke after the first two rounds (75-79) before carding a 5-over 77 in the final round.

Aaron DiGiamarino came in tied for 45th with a total score of 236. He recorded a 7-over 79 in the first round, a 5-over 77 in the second and an 8-over 80 today.

Frehman Jason Brown, who has shown flashes in the fall, rounded out the Leopards' scoring at 237. He was slow to start, tallying 163 strokes on Monday (83-80) but posted La Verne's second lowest score of the final round at 74.

Austin Matzaganian rounded out La Verne's lineup with a total score of 242. He, too, got off to a shaky start before shooting 76 in the last round.

Long Beach State claimed the team win (288-292-292=872) and the 49ers' Joe Fryer won the medalist honor with a 7-under 209 (69-69-71).

The Leopards return to action on Feb. 18 for the first regular season SCIAC tournament.
