Spencer narrowly misses cut at NCAA National Championships

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. — Alec Spencer of the La Verne men's golf team missed the cut by one stroke at the NCAA Division III National Championships, hosted by Oglethorpe, on Wednesday at Mission Inn Resort and Club. The top 18 teams and top six individuals not on those teams move on to the final two days.

The tournament exit wraps up the San Diego native's illustrious career. Spencer leaves La Verne with three national championship appearances, five All-SCIAC awards and two PING All-West Region honors.

Spencer was 5-over through the first 12 holes but sank back-to-back birdies on the 13th and the 14th for a chance to stay above the cut line. However, he lost the gains as he double-bogeyed the 16th and made another bogey on 17th to go six shots over par. He saved par on the final hole and finished tied for 37th with a two-round total score of 151 (73-78).

Three individual players who totaled 150 shots each went to a playoff and Brandon Bailey of Ferrum and Conor Rooney of Pomona-Pitzer eventually claimed the final two spots.

No. 1 Huntingdon sits atop the team leaderboard (293-291=584) and the Hawks' Addison Lambeth is the individual leader (69-72=141) heading into the final two rounds of play.
