Alec Spencer tabbed GCAA All-American

NORMAN, Okla. — Alec Spencer, who has been one of the best golfers in the country over the last four years, was named a 2017 NCAA Division III PING Honorable Mention All-America by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

The All-America honor is the final feather in the cap for the San Diego native. Spencer already had two All-Region and four All-SCIAC awards in his trophy case.

Spencer averaged 73.67 strokes per round in the regular season and posted five top-5 finishes. He was especially strong down the stretch, finishing sixth at West Cup, sixth at SCIAC No. 2 and third at SCIAC Championships to close out the regular season. He also finished tied for 35th against a national championship-caliber field at Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational.

He was selected to participate in the 2017 NCAA National Championships in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, on the strength of his resume. He narrowly missed the two-round cut by one stroke.

In addition to his individual successes, Spencer led the Leopards back into SCIAC contention this year after a 2016 season in which La Verne finished seventh in the conference. The Leopards had an 8-stroke lead going into this year's SCIAC Championships but finished second behind the then-defending national champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
