Men's and Women's Golf set for SCIAC Championships

LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne men's and women's golf teams are set to compete at the 2018 SCIAC Golf Championships beginning this Sunday, April 22.

Men's Preview

The La Verne Men's golf team will be in a tight race for the SCIAC title. The Leopards, currently ranked No. 14 by Golfstat and No. 23 by the GCAA sit eight strokes behind defending champions Claremont-Mudd-Scripps after the first two SCIAC tournaments. The Leopards took the individual titles at each of the first two tournaments.

Junior Hisham Hussein shot nine-under at SCIAC No. 1, seven strokes better than the next competitor to take the top spot at the opening conference competition. At SCIAC No. 2 Pitiluk Phanomchai took first individually, finishing on par and edging out Pomona-Pitzer's and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' top golfers by one stroke. Three Leopards finished in the top-five at the tournament with Hussein taking fourth and Conner Davis placing fifth.

Phanomchai also led the Leopards to a second place finish at the prestigious West Cup held at Sierra La Verne. Phanomchai took fifth individually in a field that included six top-25 teams. Both Hussein and Phanomchai took home SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors for their performances at the conference tournaments.

Davis has also had a strong season for the Leopards earing SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors after he led the men's golf team at the Las Vegas Desert Classic tying for 38th overall in a field of top DII and DIII golfers. 

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (9/9), Cal Lutheran (20/22), and Redlands (22/18) are all ranked in the top-25 nationally (Golfstat, GCAA).

Women's Preview

The La Verne women's squad will head into the SCIAC Championship three golfers strong. Seniors Morgan Malloy and Kirsten Contreras and freshman Alexi Gonzalez will represent La Verne at the Tournament. Contreras finished in 26th place at SCIAC No. 1 with Gonzalez finishing one-stroke back in 27th place.

With just three athletes, the Leopards will not factor into the team scoring.
