Hussein leads No. 11 Leopards at Coyote Classic

BEAUMONT, CA — Hisham Hussein led the Leopards in a tie for 18th place individually and the No. 11 University of La Verne men's golf team took ninth overall at the Coyote Classic.

The tournament, hosted by Cal State San Bernardino, featured a mixed field of NCAA Division II and III schools.

Hussein opened the tournament with his best round, finishing with an even 72. After posting a 75 in round two, the senior finished with five birdies in the final round to card a 74, bringing his total to 221. Hussein the Leopards with 12 birdies in the tournament.

Pitiluk Phanomchai finished one stroke behind Hussein in a tie for 20th. The sophomore started off with a 75 on Monday then improved by two strokes the second time around for his best round of the tournament. He finished off with two birdies on the back nine of the third round to finish with a 74.

After a slow start to open the classic, Jason Brown improved by 11 strokes in round two with a 73. Brown finished the tournament with a total score of 234. 

Jake Littlejohn (237) and Conner Davis (238) rounded of the scoring for La Verne. The Leopards finished with a team score of 905.

La Verne's second team also turned in a solid performance, finishing in 12th place with a team score of 934.

Connor Dunlop led the way for the squad with a sore of 228, including a 74 in round three. Nathan Stepanski had his best showing in round two, carding a 74 on his way to a total score of 231.

Charlie Green (236), Sarist Panichewa (245), and Brandon Blum (245) rounded out the scoring for the second team.

Next Round

The Leopards open SCIAC play this Saturday at SCIAC No. 1 at Los Serrano's Country Club North Course.
