Men's Soccer Moves To 2-0 With Shutout Over George Fox

The University of La Verne men's soccer team made it two in a row to open the 2013 season by posting a 4-0 shutout triumph over visiting George Fox University in a rare Sunday contest at Ortmayer Stadium.

The Leopards (2-0) scored twice in each half and out-shot the Bruins 21-6 for the contest in its final tune-up before the opening of SCIAC play.

La Verne had an early chance to take the lead when it received a penalty kick opportunity, but the attempt was saved by GFU's Luke Ridder.  Moments later, the Leos had another scoring chance, and would capitalize when Saul Uribe punched in an unassisted goal at the 15:34 mark for a 1-0 advantage.  Later in the half, the Leos would extend their lead when Nathan Gonzalez connected for an unassisted goal at 22:41.

In the second half, La Verne received a pair of goals courtesy of Lorenzo Leyva on an assist from Ryan Estrada at 53:41 and later from Ko Yajima - assisted by Abraham Perez - at 73:31 to close out the scoring.

The Bruins (1-3) had some opportunities to get on the board in the second half and appeared to have a goal in the 81st minute when Luke Dickens had a penalty kick which was deflected by David Lopez, only to have Dickens find the back of the net for an apparent goal.  However, officials waved off the shot to help preserve the Leopard shutout.

Several La Verne players got into the contest as a total of 25 Leopards received playing time.  Overall, the Leopards' aggressive play showed up in several areas including fouls, where they racked up 22 on the afternoon.

The Leopards commence conference play Monday night as they make the short trip to Claremont to face Pomona-Pitzer in the league opener.  Start time is 4:00 pm.
