The University of La Verne men's soccer team remained unbeaten on the young season as it posted a 2-0 shutout victory over Pomona-Pitzer in the SCIAC opener for both teams Monday afternoon in Claremont.
After a scoreless first half, the Leopards broke through in the final 45 minutes with a pair of goals to notch their second consecutive shut out in as many days.
La Verne would go on top 11:32 into the second half when Nathan Gonzalez scored from 15 yards out, as the shot scraped the post into the back of the net to give the Leos a 1-0 edge.
The Leopard defense continued to keep the Sagehens off the scoreboard, and would use a defensive counter to provide their second score. On a Pomona-Pitzer corner kick, Leopard midfielder Boye Christiansen reversed field, positioned himself toward Sagehen territory, and fed Joshua Hill, who struck from 20 yards out into the upper-left corner to provide La Verne with a 2-0 lead with 16:05 left.
La Verne tallied 14 shots for the game including 7 on goal compared to 12 and 5, respectively, for the Hens. Leopard goalkeeper Dylan Roberts notched five saves in earning the shut out.
The Leos improve to 3-0 on the year and 1-0 in the SCIAC. La Verne continues action on the road to face Redlands Saturday evening in a 7:00 pm start.
