Penalty kicks hurt Men's Soccer at Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. — The University of La Verne men's soccer team tied the game 1-1 on a goal by Jack Kolodge 10 minutes into the second half, but the Bulldogs' second penalty kick of the night gave Redlands the lead for good, beating the Leopards 3-1 Saturday night.

Redlands controlled possession for most of the game, bombarding the Leopards with 12 shots in the first half alone. But La Verne's defense held tight, not letting a shot from the field into the net.

But the Bulldogs caught a break with a minute and a half left in the first period when a foul was called on La Verne in the box. The Bulldogs' Antony Chonga drilled the penalty kick to give Redlands the initial lead.

La Verne responded in the second half when Kolodge, a sophomore, found some space at the top left corner of the box and knocked in the equalizer on just the Leopards' second shot attempt of the game.

But the Leopards caught another break when James Metoyer was carded in the box, setting up Kayvon Parsa's penalty kick goal.

Sergio Valencia scored an insurance goal for Redlands in the 71st minute.

Josh Ramirez recorded five saves in the match.

Season Impact: La Verne drops its second SCIAC game falling to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Bulldogs improve to 4-3 overall and remain an undefeated 4-0 in the SCIAC.

Next Game: The Leopards head to Pasadena this Wednesday, September 21, to take on the Caltech Beavers at 4 p.m.
