LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne men's soccer was dominant in their season opener, beating the Saint Katherine Firebirds 4-1 Saturday afternoon at Ortmayer Stadium.
The Leopards jumped on the Firebirds early, taking advantage of a penalty in the box in the eighth minute. Daniel Ortega converted the penalty kick for the 1-0 advantage.
Halfway through the opening period, Ortega was part of another goal, this time feeding David Robinson who found the back of the net to double La Verne's lead.
Later with just under two minutes remaining in the half, Victor Romero sent an on target pass from the left side to a charging Christopher Cervantes who split a pair of defenders and headed in the third goal of the game.
Steven Regla was able to get the Firebirds on the board in the waning minutes of the game.
