LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne men's soccer was dominant in their season opener, beating the Saint Katherine Firebirds 4-1 Saturday afternoon at Ortmayer Stadium.
Goals
The Leopards jumped on the Firebirds early, taking advantage of a penalty in the box in the eighth minute. Daniel Ortega converted the penalty kick for the 1-0 advantage.
Halfway through the opening period, Ortega was part of another goal, this time feeding David Robinson who found the back of the net to double La Verne's lead.
Later with just under two minutes remaining in the half, Victor Romero sent an on target pass from the left side to a charging Christopher Cervantes who split a pair of defenders and headed in the third goal of the game.
Steven Regla was able to get the Firebirds on the board in the waning minutes of the game.
Play of the Game
The highlight of the game came in the 62nd minute when Tyler Avila sprinted towards a loose ball and fired an absolutely beautiful shot from 20 yards away to the top right corner of the goal for the 4-0 lead.
By the Numbers
The Leopards outshot Saint Katherine 15-3 in the match with the Firebirds managing just one shot on the goal.
Next Game
The Leopards next open up SCIAC play when they travel down the road to face the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags on Wednesday, September 5 at 7 p.m.
