Men's Soccer beats Beavers 2-0 on the road

PASADENA, CA — Johnny DeRueda gave the Leopards the lead in the opening half, the Leopards scored an insurance goal late, and the University of La Verne men's soccer team grabbed a 2-0 road win against the Caltech Beavers.

Season Impact

With the win, La Verne improves to 4-6 overall and 2-6 in the SCIAC. The Beavers drop to 1-7 overall and 0-7 in the conference.

How It Happened

In the 31st minute, Ricardo McGary poked the ball away from a Caltech forward in the corner on the Leopards' own end and drove to midfield. He lofted a long ball to a charging DeRueda 10 yards from the box who beat the keeper one-on-one for the opening lead.

The Leopards kept the attack on in the second half, unleashing 14 shots in the period. La Verne finally capitalized on one of their attempts with just under seven minutes left to play. David Robinson sent a pass to Salvador Ortega near the left sideline who then sent the ball to a streaking Ryan Sanfilippo.

Sanfilippo beat the final defender and sent a shot to the right side of the goal to put the game away.

Caltech kept pressure on the Leopards in the match, finishing with 12 shots but just three of those coming on goal. Keeper Tristan Polakowski did his job, saving all three shots.

Next Game

The Leopards next host No. 17 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at home on Saturday, October 6 at 11 a.m. The Stags are coming off their first loss of the season, a 2-0 defeat and the hands of Occidental.
