Men's Soccer takes down No. 25 CMS

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne men's soccer team battled for 90 minutes against the top team in the SCIAC and the Leopards scored a huge 1-0 win over the No. 25 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags Saturday afternoon.

Johnny DeRueda connected with Jack Kolodge who headed in the difference maker in the 10th minute to put the Leopards ahead.

"We fought for 90 minutes and we had a burning desire to win," said La Verne head coach Trevor Persson. We had a game plan that we bought into and we matched CMS' intensity all game. It was a good all-around game for us."

The lone goal of the game came when DeRueda sent a long thrown in into the left side of the box. The ball took a hard bounce past two La Verne attackers and to a charging Kolodge who connected with a solid header to the back of the net.

Tristan Polakowski had a huge game for the Leopards grabbing 11 saves in the match to keep the first place Stags off the board.

Season Impact: With the win, the Leopards improve to 3-6 in conference play and 5-6 overall. The Stags fall to 7-2 in the SCIAC and 10-2 overall.

Next Game: The Leopards head to Pomona-Pitzer next Wednesday, October 10 at 4 p.m.
