Men's Soccer dominates Chapman in Road Win

ORANGE, CA — Cesar Rodriguez scored what proved to be the difference-maker in the final minutes of the first half, Jovanni Garcia added the insurance goal in the second half, and the University of La Verne men's soccer team dominated the Chapman Panthers in a 2-0 win on the road Saturday night.

Season Impact

The Leopards rebound from a loss earlier this week and improve to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in SCIAC play. La Verne has won four of their last five games.

Chapman drops to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in SCIAC action.

Goals

In the 40th minute, Daniel Ortega gathered the ball from about 20 yards out, near the sideline and lofted the ball towards the fall post. Oluwafunminiyi Akanwo played off the bounce and headed it toward an unmarked Rodriguez near the opposite end of the six-yard box. Rodriguez drove the ball in with his left foot to give his squad the opening lead.

With the score, Rodriguez brings his season total to three goals, already surpassing his total from last year.

In the 60th minute, Garcia capitalized off a Chapman backline mistake, stepped in front of an errant pass, and beat the keeper one-on-one to put the Leopards up by two. Garcia moves his season total to 12 goals and 28 points, both of which lead the SCIAC.

Garcia has scored in five-straight games and in all but one contest this season. As of Thursday, Garcia ranked third in NCAA Division III in total points, fifth in total goals, seventh in points per game, and ninth in goals per game.

Kevan Rehmani was stellar in front of the net, grabbing six saves to record his third shutout win of the season. Rehmani leads the SCIAC with 33 saves.
