Leopards Go Into Double Overtime In SCIAC Tournament Opener

Claremont, CA - The University of La Verne men's soccer team was on the road for the opening round of play in the 2022 SCIAC Post-Season Tournament.

La Verne, a number six seed and Pomona Pitzer, a number three seed put it all on the line as tourney play started today. Both teams looked to establish themselves early with energy on both sides of the playing field. La Verne would strike first, as Matt Moreno would score the first goal of the game 11:31 seconds into the game off of an assist by Angel Loza. La Verne would hold that lead for nearly the next eight minutes before Pomona-Pitzer would get on the board to tie the game up at 1-1. La Verne would attempt four shots in the first half but both teams would enter halftime with the score tied at 1-1.

The second half began as the first half ended with La Verne and Pomona-Pitzer both seeking the net to put points on the board. La Verne would attack in the second half of play and would percevieabley score a goal, but would be called offsides and the goal was waived off, keeping the score tied at 1-1. La Verne would attempt three shots in the second half, unable to convert those shots into points but would not allow the Sahegens to score as both teams entered the first ten minute overtime. The first overtime ended with the game remaining tied at 1-1. The second overtime ended in the same manner as a the first overtime with the game tied at 1-1, leading to a five shot penalty kickoff. La Verne would convert four out of five kicks while Pomona converted five out of five kicks, resulting in a season ending loss for the Leopards. 

Head coach Trevor Persson was very proud of his teams resilience through the season and their performance in today's tournament game. "I'm extremely proud of the effort our entire team put today. Our guys pushed and pushed themselves to the limit for 110+ minutes. Our overall record is not a very good representation of how good our team truly is. I couldn't be prouder of this group if young men."
