Watkins, Moreno Post National Qualifying Marks

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – A pair of strong performances by Lenore Moreno and Chancise Watkins highlighted the action for the University of La Verne track and field teams this weekend at the Mountain T's Indoor Invitational hosted by the Northern Arizona University.

La Verne was the only Division III school in a field of Division I and some national team competitors.

Moreno, a reigning All-American in the 10,000-meter run outdoors, claimed the 3,000-meter with a national qualifying mark of 10:28.74.

Watkins ran a 21.65 in the 200-meter, also a national qualifying mark, and finished second behind Southern Utah's Preston Myers.

The Leopard men had strong showings in the jumps. Jacob Lopez (45 feet, 1 1/2 inches) and Stewart McKenzie (44-9 3/4) went 2-3 in the triple jump. James Francis leapt a 22-5 3/4 (6.85m) in the long jump to finish fifth and cleared 6-2 3/4 (1.90m) in the high jump.

Katie Yeager cleared 11-6 1/2 (3.52m) in the pole vault for the women.

Nick Gonsalves ran a 7.02 in the 60-meter dash and posted a 22.83 in the 200.

The Leopards are back in action next Saturday at the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers meet.
