Freshmen Trio Set Personal Records in Hammer Throw

LOS ANGELES — It was just another day on the tracks for Moreno.

Competing against Division I and professional runners at the annual Occidental Invitational, Moreno lowered her school record in the 1,500 meters—set just a week ago at the 2014 SCIAC Championships—by more than six seconds with a time of 4 minutes, 29.68 seconds and became the first La Verne woman to break the 4:30 mark. She finished fourth overall in the event.

Moreno owns the school records in the 1,500 meters, the 5,000 meters and the 10,000 meters and ranks top three in the nation in all three events this year.

A trio of freshmen set new personal records in the in the hammer throw. Carrasco shattered his previous personal record in the hammer throw by almost 19 feet at 164 feet, 2 inches (50.05 meters), Chris Gura registered a toss of 158-10 (48.42m) and Matt Reinbolz recorded a throw of 157-01 (46.05m). Carrasco, Gura and Reinbolz finished fifth, seventh and ninth, respectively in the event.

Gura also threw 142-07 (43.46m) in the discus throw.

Jaclyn Castleberry recorded a 125-05 (38.23m) in the women's discus.

Katie Yeager and Taylor Bernhard both cleared 3.30 meters in the women's pole vault and Taylor Schulze was just behind with a clearance of 3.15m.

James Francis leaped 22-06.25 (6.86m) in the long jump.

Alyse Thummel finished the women's 800 in 2:19.62. Michael Ramirez (1:56.81) and Jayden Earlywine (1:58.36) raced in the men's 800.
